As rail travel gains popularity as a sustainable option to flying in many parts of Europe, new initiatives from rail company Trenitalia and the Italian National Tourist Board will enhance inter-city train travel between some of the country’s key tourist attractions and destinations.
More than 75 new stops have been added to inter-city trains for the 2022 summer season, linking popular destinations such as the Ligurian Riviera, Versilia in Tuscany, Sicily and the Adriatic Coast.
Intercity trains will now feature eight artistic ‘postcards’ showcasing scenic natural landscapes accessible by train, as well as a dedicated 24-seat carriage for families, featuring a stroller area, bathroom with nursery area, themed tables with games for toddlers, vending machine, and stand-up area.
Further encouraging family travel by rail, a child aged 15 and under can travel free with a paying adult.
In addition to new facilities for families, Intercity trains will offer extra charging ports, as well as more than 600 bicycle spaces per day to meet growing demand from locals and tourists keen to explore the Italian countryside on two wheels.
“Italy is currently enjoying a renaissance as a tourist destination, and these additions will further integrate train travel and tourism to help encourage visitors to experience our incredible destinations in a more sustainable, family-friendly way,” said Italian National Tourism Board manager for Australia and New Zealand, Emanuele Attanasio.
