Europe has solidified its position as a top tourist destination following the pandemic, with international tourism numbers surging in 2023 and early 2024.

According to a report by Travel and Tour World, the continent welcomed approximately 1.3 billion international tourists in 2023, reflecting a 33.4% increase compared to 2022 and a remarkable 112.2% rise from 2021.

To put this into perspective, the global population was approximately 8.1 billion in 2023. With 1.3 billion travellers visiting Europe, this represents about 16% of the world's population travelling to Europe in that year alone.

France leads this resurgence, attracting a record 100 million visitors in 2023. Spain follows with 85.2 million tourists, while Italy welcomed 57.2 million.

Other countries, including Germany, Greece, and Austria, have also experienced substantial growth, bolstered by new flight routes that enhance accessibility to these popular destinations.

Despite the economic boost from the influx of tourists, concerns regarding overtourism have emerged. Notably, popular locations such as Venice and Barcelona have seen protests related to excessive tourist numbers impacting local life.

In response, Switzerland has taken proactive measures to mitigate overtourism effects, such as restricting access to its iconic Alpine lake. The Switzerland Tourism Agency is working to evenly distribute tourist flows throughout the year.
