Cruise ships sailing in northern Europe have had itineraries disrupted by climate change activists, who blocked the port of Amsterdam.

The action was carried out by Extinction Rebellion, who have called for an end to cruise ships entering the Netherlands city.

The protest action blocked the passage of the 2,490-passenger Serenade of the Seas, which was en route to Amsterdam.

Also impacted was Ambassador Cruise Line which rerouted its ship, Ambition, to the port of IJmuiden, approximately an hour’s drive from Amsterdam

Other cruise lines have also experienced delays while seeking to reach Amsterdam. On 11 August, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Mariner was delayed for more than four hours by climate activists.

A day earlier, another Royal Caribbean International ship, Jewel of the Seas, was forced to divert to IJmuiden rather than dock in Amsterdam.
