The word "innovation" causes many a heated discussion, as it means different things to different people.

It can be thought of something new that has never been seen or done before. More often, it's applied to a new way or different approach to doing something.

John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer at Carnival Corporation, takes a very different view.

He says innovation is the "most overused word in the dictionary right now" and says it's more about focusing on the goal and what you want to change.

He is equally frank on what agile development means to him: "An excuse to do whatever the hell you want and not achieve your goal."

And he describes waterfall development as a "method to get to your goal," adding that you never get to that goal because of too much bureaucracy.

Padgett, who was instrumental in Disney's MagicBand and, more recently, wristbands onboard Carnival ships, was on a panel titled Technology's Innovators and Disruptors during Consumer Technology Association’s CES 2019 this week.

Alongside his views on achieving goals, he touches on attitudes to failure, hiring "carpenters" to get diverse perspectives within teams and getting rid of "preconceived filters" in life.
