International travel can be an exciting opportunity to explore different cultures or conduct business. However, in the excitement of the trip, cybersecurity is often overlooked, leading to the loss of valuable data or money. Security experts at OctaFX, an online currency trading brokerage, have compiled seven essential cybersecurity tips that can help safeguard international travellers.

1. Keep your devices secure

It's important to use strong passwords and lock devices when not in use. Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels, restaurants, and other places, as these networks are vulnerable to hacking attempts.

2. Avoid publicly accessible computers and USB charging stations

Public computers and USB charging stations can be infected with malware, putting personal and financial information at risk. Avoid entering sensitive information on such devices, or do it in incognito mode and log out of the accounts afterwards.

3. Backup important data

Backup copies of passport, other travel documents, and financial and personal information. Store backup data on an encrypted external hard drive or in a secure cloud storage service and update it regularly.

4. Keep software up-to-date

Keep all software up-to-date for devices, as updates usually contain important security patches that make it harder for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.

5. Beware of skimming

Skimming is a type of theft in which a device is attached to an ATM or other electronic payment system to steal credit card information. To prevent skimming, avoid any suspicious devices involved with electronic payments and use an ATM located at a bank office.

6. Be cautious of QR codes

Criminals may create fake QR codes that install malware on devices or direct the user to a phishing website. Be cautious when scanning codes from unknown sources and avoid them if there is a safe option for getting the same information.

7. Research tour operators and accommodations

Travellers are further warned to protect themselves from fraudulent tour operators and accommodations, by doing research on the company and the tour beforehand, reading reviews from previous customers, and only booking through reputable sources.
