Known for its clear views of Mount Fuji, Hokuto City in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture is adding an unexpected new draw to its tourism offering: ninja training.

Located around 1.5 hours by train from Tokyo, the city has launched a Two-Day Ninja Training Experience Tour, designed to immerse visitors in the world of Japan’s legendary covert warriors.

The two-day ninja training experience tour will enable participants to don traditional ninja attire and, under the guidance of professional instructors, learn the fundamentals of ninja techniques, walking methods, etiquette, breathing practices, and mental focus.

Come evenings, the traditional Japanese inn Oyado Izumien, which is surrounded by quiet woodland, will house participants.

On day two, the journey continues along the Shingen-bo-michi at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, a historical route believed to have been designed by warlord Takeda Shingen for military movements.

Officials have added that the region, which has retained the atmosphere of the Edo period, plays an important role in the programme, allowing visitors to immerse in the world of the Sengoku era.

All ninjas will receive a certificate upon completion of the training.

The programme seeks to reach seasoned travellers and culture vultures who seek “a deeper appreciation of Japan”, as travel agencies, local governments, and regional businesses collaborate to disperse tourism flows that continue to concentrate around the Mount Fuji area and major metropolitan cities.
