Maya (Sanskrit meaning Illusion or Dream), www.mayatangallesrilanka.com is an exquisitely executed five suite villa restoration of a Sri Lankan Manor House dating from the late 19th and early 20th century which pays dutiful homage to its Dutch and British period features whilst blending seamlessly with its new contemporary interiors and original design accents. Situated in the rural village of Aranwella and just eight kilometers from Tangalle in the island’s lush southern interior, Maya is set within a rich landscape of tropical gardens and coconut trees abundant with local bird life and surrounded by paddy fields. Maya provides a true sanctuary for couples and families looking to experience the best of Sri Lanka’s heritage, culture and cuisine. Easy access to local attractions and the beaches of the south coast make Maya a perfect base for exploring.

Previously known as Aranwella Walauwa, Maya is the creation of interior designer Niki Fairchild who first came across the Old Waluawa in 2004 during one of many trips to Sri Lanka. Built by one of the ruling elite of Ceylon, whose family presided over the village for generations. the renovation of the original house and construction of a new wing commenced in 2009 and is now complete. Captivated by the property and its undisturbed private setting, Niki embarked on a personal quest to rejuvenate and protect the heritage building through its sensitive restoration. Maya’s f ive suites all afford 25 foot ceilings (some with four poster beds and private courtyards) and are individually named after trees in the grounds. Thekka and Kumbukare situated in the Old House; Amba, Ehela and Kohomba are within the new wing. The over-sized en-suite bathrooms all have rain showers and a range of bathroom amenities using organically grown tropical herbs and spices.
