China has announced that all scheduled flights on 49 air routes between the Chinese mainland and Japan will be cancelled for February 2026.

Last month, nearly 47.2 % of China-to-Japan flights were already being cancelled.

Services on all routes such as Beijing Daxing to Osaka Kansai and from major cities like Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou have since been stopped.

Chinese carriers including Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines have extended special refund and itinerary change policies for tickets on Japan routes. Passengers who purchased tickets before 26 January for travel between late March and 24 October can now change or refund their flights without fees.

The move comes as China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges citizens to reconsider travel to Japan during the Lunar New Year period, citing concerns about public security and natural disaster risks.

Observers however link the disruption to the ongoing diplomatic tensions between China and Japan.
