In addition to its bigger venue on Empress Lawn and extended event hours, new elements at this year’s edition included a dedicated bar helmed by Manhattan — recently named Asia’s Best Bar for 2018.
It was seven on a Friday evening and Empress Lawn fronting the Singapore River was in full swing with hundreds of people gathered for STREAT, an annual two-day outdoor food and beverage event featuring local culinary talents.
In addition to its bigger venue on Empress Lawn and extended event hours, new elements at this year’s edition included a dedicated bar helmed by Manhattan — recently named Asia’s Best Bar for 2018.
Guests were treated to a four-hands pop-up restaurant dining experience helmed by chefs of Michelin-starred establishments, Emmanuel Stroobant (Saint Pierre) and Haikal Johari (Alma), as well as dishes from 11 local establishments, including heritage Indian restaurant Gayatri, traditional Malay restaurant Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang and modern Singaporean restaurant The Quarters.
Particularly popular with the crowd were exotic offerings such as Lolla’s Sea Urchin Pudding, as well as heritage dishes with a modern twist such as pork collar with Balinese style tumeric-based rempah served with a wild baby sprouts and lychee salad.
The event also featured culinary workshops ranging from a masterclass on Mille Crêpe by award-winning chef Winnie Goh, who was recognised as ‘Pastry Chef of the Year’ at the World Gourmet Summit to traditional foods such as kimchi-making by Mahota Commune and ang koo kueh making by Rainbow Lapis.
STREAT is part of the annual Singapore Food Festival, which runs this year from July 13 to 29. Into its 25th edition this year, the festival will host over 20 events that showcase traditional and contemporary flavours in Singapore’s culinary scene.
