The Medical Council of India is investigating 15 doctors who visited the UK in 2012 on a tour sponsored by a pharmaceutical company.
Pharmaceutical companies are known to have large travel budgets to allow them to indirectly promote their products to doctors.
The itinerary included visits to Loch Ness in Scotland and shopping in London. The MCI action has been taken following a complaint by an activist group.
“Doctors campaigning for ethics in medical practice have cautioned incentives from drug companies may influence doctors to prescribe expensive drugs when cheaper alternatives are available or unnecessary drugs when patients do not require them,” according to The Statesman.
Medical Council of India rules do not permit doctors to accept travel or hospitality such as hotel accommodation, from pharmaceutical companies.
According to the newspaper, the company at the centre of the complaint has denied any wrongdoing.
