KATHMANDU - Phurba Tashi Sherpa has created history by climbing Mount Everest twice in a week, between May 17 and May 23, and has been honoured with the David A Memorial Award from the by the American Alpine Club.

According to the Nepal Association of Tour Operators, Phurba was accompanied by his friend Lopsang Themba Sherpa who also climbed Mt. Everest twice within a week time.

"When Phurba, 31, climbed down first time after ascending Mt. Everest, Japanese climbers requested him to guide them since their Sardar was sick. Together with Lopsang, he helped them to atop Everest," said the NATO.

The three-time Everest summitters last year rescued two American climbers who exhausted their oxygen 500m below Mt. Everest.
