Starting July 2024, climbers ascending Japan's Mount Fuji via Yamanashi Prefecture's most used trail will face a ¥2,000 (US$14) fee.

Governor Kotaro Nagasaki aims to curb congestion and fund safety measures, targeting unsafe practices like "bullet climbing," attempting a one-night ascent for sunrise.

The revenue generated will address issues like litter and underdressed hikers, prevent bullet climbing, and construct a shelter in case of eruption.

Separate from the ¥1,000 (US$7) voluntary fee, this move addresses concerns in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Mount Fuji, which attracted 221,322 climbers last summer. The fee proposal awaits Yamanashi's prefectural assembly approval.
