A man died after being sucked into the engine of a departing aircraft at Bergamo Airport in northern Italy on 8 July, an airport spokesperson told AFP.
The victim, described as “neither a passenger nor an airport employee”, had broken into the airport before using an emergency exit to access the runway, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
Airport security “pursued” the man but were unable to stop him before he approached the aircraft, which was preparing for take-off.
The victim was reported to be a 35-year-old Italian.
Flights at Bergamo Airport – Italy’s third busiest by passenger volume – were suspended following the incident and later resumed at midday, according to airport management company SACBO.
An investigation is underway.
