The Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) Terminal 2 will move its operations to Terminal 1 on December 1 after a month’s delay.
This means all low cost carriers, currently operating from Terminal 2, will have relocate to the new terminal as well. However, it is not clear if AirAsia would relocate on that date. The airline has refused to relocate citing higher airport tax and heavy congestion. The new RM1.7 billion (US$389 million) terminal can accommodate up to nine million passengers annually, and 3,200 passengers at any given time. The three-floor terminal has 64 check-in counters for international and domestic flights, 17 aircraft parking bays capable of accommodating both wide and narrow-body aircraft, 36 immigration counters (16 for departures and 20 for arrivals), six baggage carousels, and 12 aerobridges.
