More than 60 domestic and overseas carriers including China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Beijing Capital Airlines plan to operate out of Beijing Daxing.
Beijing's new multi-billion-dollar airport, Daxing International, will be inaugurated on September 30, ahead of schedule.
More than 60 domestic and overseas carriers including China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Beijing Capital Airlines plan to operate out of Beijing Daxing.
Finnair will grow its operations in the country by operating three weekly flights to Daxing as of November 3. LOT Polish Airlines will also transfer four of its seven weekly flights from Beijing Capital to Daxing (PKX) on October 28.
Daxing is expected to operate at full capacity by 2025, with four runways and the potential to receive 72 million passengers per year.
A total of seven runways and a second terminal are planned for the future to accommodate 880,000 flights and 100 million passengers by 2040, which at current projections will make Daxing the world’s biggest airport.
Daxing is about 46km south of the centre of Beijing and will be linked to the city by a new subway line, which is due to undergo a test run in September. The new facility is also 65km from Beijing International Airport.
Plans call for Beijing Daxing to serve Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and as a hub for members of the SkyTeam alliance while Star Alliance members will stay at the existing Beijing Capital.
The airport's master plan was designed by the China Airport Construction Corporation and will feature a ground transportation centre for links to high-speed rail, metro, expressways, Beijing Airport Bus routes, local buses and inter-airport systems.
Daxing will also be at the centre of a new economic zone to encourage growth in a region that has been based mostly on agriculture and on industries such as steel.
