Asiana Airlines is weighing passengers on international flights from
Seoul Gimpo Airport – but no one will have to worry about being
off-loaded – or buying an extra seat.
It’s not the first time Asiana has faced the weighty problem of
estimating the total weight onboard. Now the airline wants up-to-date
data about the weight of passengers and will make the checks until the
end of January. Other airlines have made similar checks in the past.
The average weight of passengers onboard a flight can help carriers to evaluate factors such as capacity and fuel loads.
An EU aviation study found that the mean figure for air travellers in 2021-22 was 76.3 kilograms.
Asiana is also weighing hand luggage to further assist its research.
