Say hello to the Seoul Tourism Plaza, a nine storey hub bringing together the tourism industry, academia, associations, and institutions together towards a hopeful Covid rebound "before any other city".

"It is a hub to support Seoul's tourism not only in overcoming the unprecedented blow from the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic but also in taking an advantageous position in the rapidly changing tourism trend," said an official from the Seoul Tourism Organization (STO).

The official added that the space promotes "related parties [to] organically connect and participate through collaboration".

Spanning nine stories within Samil Building at Gwancheol-dong, Jongno-gu, the 6,941sqm area will support three key roles: 1) rebooting the post-pandemic tourism industry, 2) strengthen major associations, institutions, and public-private partnerships, and 3) expanding opportunities for citizens to enjoy tourism.

When the plaza opened in April, tenants included the Seoul Tourism Association, Tourism Australia, the Korea Association of PCO, as well as 15 tourism startups, selected through a public contest. This number has since grown to 67.

Startups such as AR-based tourism developer-cum-operator iMPERFECT, subscription-based Hallyu content provider MUSICKING, and traditional Korean culture experience platform operator modernhan come together in this tourism incubator, not only to tap on shared spaces, but also corporate support programmes — from commercialisation, promotion, marketing, to investment attraction assistance.

Facilities include online studios to support YouTube broadcasting or shoot advertisements, as well as networking with associations, institutions, and overseas tourism boards within Seoul Tourism Plaza.

"The post-Covid tourism will be all about safety, local, non-face-to-face, and digital. To secure demand for global tourism before any other city, the city of Seoul is actively implementing a project to support, recover and leap for Seoul tourism. We will do our utmost best to leap forward to 'new Seoul, new tourism' through Seoul Tourism Plaza's successful execution of the control tower role," said STO.
