Pulau Redang is a small nine-island island group in the South China Sea, on the east side of Peninsular Malaysia, an area that is becoming increasingly popular with those who want an upmarket yet less busy destination where nature rules the roost. It lies about 45 kilometres from the coast of the city of Kuala Terengganu.
The island group sits within protected waters, the Terengganu Marine Park, a haven for those who like to explore coral reefs and marine life.
Redang has several luxury resorts, many of them of international standards, although it is the clear waters and lush tropical hinterland that attract visitors to the islands.
For a taste of authentic local food – think ‘ais kacang’ (shaved ice topped with syrup, jellies, nuts and fruits) and curry fish head – head to Pasir Panjang where most of the food and beverage outlets such as Redang Laguna Food Court can be found. This popular beach on the island also hosts some of the best-rated resorts, as well as plenty of Island activities – nightclubs, karaoke clubs and discos.
Diving enthusiasts are in for a treat, as Redang is known for its amazing visibility and unspoiled coral reefs. During a dive, expect to see schools of jacks, fusiliers and trevallies, black tip reef sharks, parrotfish, cuttlefish and turtles. There are occasional sightings of manta rays and whale sharks.
Snorkeling is also popular around Redang Island when conditions permit. At the Marine Park Centre, visitors can snorkel around a wreck, and sometimes spot turtles. The best spot for snorkeling at Redang is along Pasir Panjang.
Where nature abounds

Redang is much sought-after for diving and snorkelling.
The island is also perfect for nature walks. Visitors might spot animals such as monkeys, monitor lizards and squirrels. Be warned though, mosquitoes are abundant so hikers are strongly advised to have an effective repellant, and be well covered with long sleeves and pants while in the jungle.
There are no roads on the island except for the main road leading from the small airport.
If you are staying at The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort or Redang Island Resort, you could catch a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur’s Subang Airport via Berjaya Air. Alternatively, a more leisurely way to travel is via Dream Cruises, which has recently launched a new “Summer Island Idyll” itinerary onboard Genting Dream.
“With the success of our current Island Escapade cruises, we are delighted to introduce Genting Dream’s first summer itinerary from Singapore, which continues to be an important strategic homeport offering great infrastructure, particularly for our fly-cruise guests”, said Thatcher Brown, president of Dream Cruises.
As part of the itinerary, guests can choose from two alternating five-night Summer Island Idyll itineraries departing from Singapore: Pulau Redang coupled with Ko Samui and Bangkok (Laem Chabang) in Thailand; or Pulau Redang, Sihanoukville in Cambodia and Bangkok (Laem Chabang).
Onboard the ship, guests can enjoy a wide variety of amenities including the largest spa complex at sea, a six-slide waterpark, a 35-metre outdoor zip line located 18 decks above the water, as well as more than 35 restaurant and bar concepts.
