Selangor is redefining its tourism strategy with Visit Selangor 2025, aiming to attract 8 million visitors through curated experiences that blend culture, nature and sustainability.

As one of Malaysia’s most dynamic state, Selangor encourages visitors to explore beyond the usual hot spots, from the heritage-rich Klang to Kuala Selangor’s firefly park and mangrove areas.

The state is drawing awareness to lesser-known attractions while positioning itself as a sustainable destination. With 3.6 million visitors by mid-2024, Selangor is set to exceed previous benchmarks, driven by growing interest in ecotourism and heritage travel.

Tour guides or storytellers? How about both

Speaking exclusively to Travel Weekly Asia at the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025 in Johor Bahru, Tourism Selangor CEO Chua Yee Ling highlighted ongoing investments in capacity-building, particularly for local guides. “Our training programmes focus on storytelling techniques to elevate visitor engagement while preserving Selangor’s rich history,” she shared.

She cited Klang as an example, where its vibrant Indian quarter, the colonial elegance of the Royal Klang Club, and the historic Tengku Kelana Indian Muslim Mosque create a compelling backdrop for immersive heritage experiences. “This initiative not only strengthens the tourism value chain but also creates economic opportunities for local communities,” she added.

Refills and green thrills

Sustainability is at the heart of Visit Selangor 2025, with initiatives under the Smart Selangor Action Plan 2025 focusing on eco-friendly infrastructure and responsible tourism practices. “This year, we are collaborating with industry stakeholders to promote responsible travel. Initiatives like refill stations at key attractions are reducing plastic waste, further solidifying Selangor’s commitment to green tourism,” Yee Ling shared.

In line with this sustainability-driven approach, Sky i-City, Selangor's newest tourism landmark that opened on 18 January 2025, is setting new standards for thrill-based attractions. Towering at 60 meters, it offers stunning panoramic views of the Klang Valley skyline from its transparent glass floor. A 600-meter glass slide connects to the observation deck, providing an exhilarating experience while incorporating energy-efficient LED lighting as part of its sustainable design.

A holistic destination for Muslim-friendly travel

Selangor is expanding its tourism appeal by enhancing its lifestyle and cultural offerings, complementing its strong Muslim-friendly infrastructure. As one of the top destinations for Muslim travellers, the state is evolving beyond just halal food to offer a holistic experience.

Malls like Central i-City and 1 Utama feature dedicated modest fashion zones, catering to the growing demand for modest wear, which is often difficult to find in Western markets. Homegrown and global brands like Decathlon and Uniqlo are popular for their modest activewear collections that resonate with Muslim travellers, seamlessly blending shopping with cultural authenticity. This makes Selangor not just a retail hub, but a well-rounded destination for experience-driven travel.
