Vilnius – the capital of Lithuania in northern Europe – is claiming the title of the world’s best sleep tourism capital.
Why so? It has all the attributes that contribute to a calmer, less chaotic visit: fewer crowds, strong sustainability credentials, a compact walkable centre, and easy access to nature.
The city scores highly also thanks to its excellent air quality, green spaces, and crisp nighttime temperatures (around 12-14°C in peak summer).
"Overcrowding, noise, pollution, and heat are making many destinations in Europe less enjoyable for tourists. Vilnius offers an off-the-beaten-track alternative with fewer crowds but plenty of authenticity,” says Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, head of communication at Go Vilnius.
Vilnius’ compact layout makes it very walkable, and its UNESCO-listed historic streets are easy to explore, allowing visitors to be on their feet for longer periods of time.
With more than 60% green space, Vilnius also offers abundant nature experiences. Visitors can kayak in the river Vilnelė that runs through the Old Town, hike forest trails located within the city’s limits, or swim in the city's rivers and lakes.
“Temperature and light play roles too. Capitals that cool down after sunset and have lower light pollution give the body strong signals. That biological clarity – bright days and darker nights – helps regulate sleep timing naturally,” says neuroscientist and sleep researcher, Dr. Laura Bojarskaitė.
