Thailand has launched the Thailand Traveller Safety initiative, running from 1 January to 31 August 2024, to provide tourists with medical insurance of up to US$14,000 for accidents and compensation of one million baht (US$28,000) in the event of death.
The move, according to Tourism Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, emphasises the Thai government's commitment to visitor safety and satisfaction.
The scheme allocates 50 million baht for relief to foreign tourists on a case-by-case basis in the event of accidents, crimes, or other unfortunate events or disasters. However, the incident must not be due to tourists' carelessness or intention to commit illegal acts.
Eligible foreign tourists, with valid passports and visiting Thailand between 1 January and 31 August 2024, can register online through the Thailand Traveller Safety (TTS) system before travelling.
Compensation includes up to one million baht in the case of death, 300,000 baht for permanent organ loss, loss of sight, or permanent disability, and actual medical expenses up to 500,000 baht for accident injuries.
