After surpassing its 2023 target of 4.8 million international visitor
arrivals, the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines recently
shared its goal of welcoming 7 million international visitors in 2024.
This goal, though slightly lower than previous records due to recent
global challenges, is a part of their strategy to revitalise tourism.
Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who heads the DOT, highlighted
their achievements in 2023 and emphasised the need for collaboration
between different groups to boost tourism.
Looking ahead, the DOT has exciting plans for 2024. They intend to
add 18 more rest areas for tourists across the country, explore new
places for cruise tours, and expand the popular Hop On Hop Off (HOHO)
tours.
Additionally, they'll be setting up emergency centres specifically
for tourists and creating a guide to manage risks during emergencies
related to tourism.
Secretary Frasco stressed the importance of attracting investments in
tourism-related areas such as better hotels, improved marine
transportation, and special tourism zones.
She highlighted that their focus is not only on growing tourism but
also on ensuring sustainability and resilience within the industry.
Their aim is to create opportunities for growth while protecting the
environment and local communities.
The DOT's plans for 2024 indicate a strong commitment to making the
Philippines an appealing and responsible destination for travellers,
while also considering the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
