The Bali provincial government is in the midst of drafting a regulation that will require tourists to submit their bank statements before entering the island.
The prerequisite checks, called the Regional Regulation on the Implementation of Quality Tourism is exactly as its name suggests – to sieve out only “quality tourists” to enter Bali.
And according to Governor Wayan Koster, considering “the amount of money in your savings account over the past three months” is one way to ensure Bali can shift its focus from quantity to quality tourism.
Other criteria to enter Bali will include tourists' planned itineraries and length of stay.
The suggested regulation comes after the popular tourist island received 7.05 million international arrivals via air in 2025, which have compounded issues ranging from traffic congestion and waste, to flooding and infrastructure issues.
While still in the draft stage, the governor has mentioned the legislation could be in place as soon as this year.
