The Amalfi Coast is set to become more accessible with the upcoming inauguration of Salerno Airport in southern Italy.
Starting 11 July 2024, Spanish airline Volotea will pioneer regular passenger flights from the newly revitalised Aeroporto di Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
Renovations, costing almost €260 million (US$281 million), aim to transform the former military airport into a bustling hub capable of handling up to six million passengers annually by 2046.
Despite the Amalfi Coast's global acclaim for its stunning coastal landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, making it a sought-after destination for avid travellers, accessibility has persistently posed challenges. The journey from Switzerland isn’t easy, requiring approximately twelve hours by car or ten hours by train with two changes.
The upcoming airport, set to open in July, strategically addresses these travel hurdles. Currently attracting around 5 million annual tourists, the Amalfi Coast has the potential to solidify its position as a formidable competitor, even against renowned Italian destinations like Venice.
Volotea's inaugural flight will connect Salerno to Nantes, France, with plans for subsequent routes to Cagliari, Catania, and Verona, enhancing accessibility for travellers exploring the enchanting Amalfi region.
The expansion includes new operating areas and a passenger terminal, expected to be completed by 2027, marking a significant development for the Amalfi Coast's tourism infrastructure.
