A mid-2020 starting date for construction has been indicated although feasibility studies are at an early stage and the developers will have to negotiate with landowners before a route can be finalised.
DENPASAR – The Indonesian government
has flagged off a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train project connecting Bali’s I
Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, with the tourist hot spot of Kuta.
The 4.78km system is being developed in a joint venture between a local
company and Korean interests, including the Korean Rail Network Authority
(KRNA).
A mid-2020 starting date for
construction has been indicated although feasibility studies are at an early
stage and the developers will have to negotiate with landowners before a route
can be finalised.
It is hoped that the LRT, when
completed in 2022, will ease traffic congestion on roads connecting the airport
with Kuta.
Head of the Bali Transportation Agency,
Samsi Gunarta, told Kompas, “There will be both underground and over ground
sections. For areas where land acquisition is difficult it will likely be built
underground.”
