Two German tourists in their twenties have been arrested in Mallorca
after causing significant damage at Hotel Leblon in S'Arenal. The
tourists, who were accompanied by their partners, defecated in a lift,
emptied two fire extinguishers, and destroyed furniture and a mattress,
resulting in damages worth approximately €500 (US$554).
According to a report by the Daily Express, the individuals spent a
night in jail before being granted bail by a local court. This incident
is unlikely to help with the growing disdain of tourists among Spanish residents, who are already protesting against the increasing number of visitors and their behaviour.

Mallorca, the largest island in the Balearic Islands, relies heavily
on tourism, contributing 45% to the local GDP. In 2023, the Balearic
Islands attracted 14.4 million visitors, making it Spain’s second most
popular tourist destination.
Earlier this year, a German tourist was also arrested for flipping a
bulldozer at a construction site, causing injuries and substantial
damage. Such incidents underscore rising concerns about tourist
behaviour on the island.
Spain welcomed 33 million foreign visitors between January and May
2024—up 14% from the same period in 2023. However, the surge in tourism
has led to growing frustration among local residents and authorities.
