Thick, smoky haze in northern Thailand has reached critical levels with four flights bound for Chiang Mai prevented from landing on Monday.
The haze, caused by farmers burning off waste on their land, is causing health problems as dust levels in the atmosphere far exceed international safety standards. The poor air quality has been a part of daily life for locals for more than two months.
Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha was due to fly to Chiang Mai on Tuesday to discuss the situation with northern provincial governors.
Most of the northern provinces, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, are likely to face health-threatening haze problems until at least early May, according to meteorologists.
