A massive development of the old Tsukiji fish market in central Tokyo will result in a massive commercial and residential complex featuring a 50,000-seat event stadium, a culinary centre and a transportation hub.

The Tsukiji fish market closed in 2018 after 83 years due to its aging infrastructure and has been relocated to Toyosu. It remains a popular tourist destination with restaurants and shops still operating in the outer market area.

The private consortium chosen for the US$5.8 billion redevelopment of the former market area plans to turn the waterfront land into the new face of Tokyo.

It is scheduled to open in the early 2030s and will include a transportation hub – including a futuristic terminal for flying taxis – along with a stadium with a retractable roof to host international sports, live events and trade shows.

A conferences and exhibitions facility with a ballroom that can accommodate 1,200 people and a research and development base for food-related innovation will also be part of the complex.
