A new island destination in Vietnam’s northern Quang Ninh province has been earmarked for tourism development, with investment going into opening homestays.
Cai Chien Island, which sits 350km north of Hanoi, was recently recognised as a new provincial destination, according to Vietnam News. The island is about 80km from other popular destinations like the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay and Bái Tử Long Bay.
The 155 sq km island has seen more tourists in recent years, who come to see its pristine beaches, Cai Chien, Vung Bau and Dau Rong. The island is also famous for its rich forest ecosystem, home to many species of wild animals, as well as its fresh seafood.
Local authorities have opened training courses on community-based tourism, with dozens of households on the island investing in opening homestays, providing hundreds of rooms to serve holidaymakers.
The island is accessible by a ferry from Ghenh Vo Wharf, located 8km away. The ferries are operated thrice daily from the mainland, and carry up to 32 people each time. Ferry timings run at 6:30am, 10:30am and 4:30pm.
