Amsterdam is set to raise its tourist tax on hotel stays to 12.5% in
2024, making it the highest in Europe. This increase applies to
overnight stays in hotels, rentals, guesthouses, and cruise ship
passengers.
Current tax stands at 7%, rising to 12.5%, making the average room
rate tax €21.80 (US$23) from €15.25 (US$16). In comparison, Barcelona's
tourist taxes average €2.25 per day, while Paris charges around €4 per
night.
Revenue from the hike will address local needs, green spaces, and
community resources. This tax aims not to burden residents but help
tourists pay for the city's tasks, addressing overtourism and
maintaining clean streets.
Although Amsterdam's tax funds sustainable tourism, critics argue it
should improve essential services. Travellers can expect higher
expenses, with an average Friday-to-Sunday trip costing €550 (US$580)
and increased daily food expenses, totaling approximately €33 ($35).
Additional costs may include train tickets, bike rentals, and attraction
admissions.
