China's cruise industry is experiencing a strong recovery in 2024, with substantial increases in passenger numbers, cruise ships, and voyage offerings.

Official data from China's Ministry of Transport reveals a surge in cruise travel during the first half of 2024. Nearly 500,000 passengers embarked on cruises across China, with 23 cruise ships operating 206 voyages. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023. The ministry also reported a nearly 60% rise in passenger volume from the first quarter to the second, indicating a strengthening trend.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China projects a full recovery of the cruise market within two years, driven by the growing domestic tourism sector.

Infrastructure improvements are playing a crucial role in this recovery. The Ministry of Transport highlighted the establishment of thirteen new cruise embarkation ports nationwide, from Dalian in the northeast to Sanya in the south. Additionally, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) has introduced measures to streamline entry and exit procedures for foreign cruise passengers and crew members.

Several major cruise lines are expanding their presence in China's market, including China COSCO Shipping Lines, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and MSC Cruises. These companies are offering a variety of domestic and international cruises to cater to Chinese travellers.

China's tourism authorities, including the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and local tourism boards, are actively promoting cruise vacations and providing information on cruise options.
