Ever wanted to sleep with penguins? Now you can

One of the few private freehold islands in Australia, the owner has recently constructed a fully copper clad lodge to accommodate up to 10 people. The property can now be rented out.

If you’ve ever yearned to sleep within a penguin colony, Picnic Island in Tasmania is the only place in the world where you can do it.

One of the few private freehold islands in Australia, the owner has recently constructed a fully copper clad lodge to accommodate up to 10 people. The property can now be rented out.

Cantilevered over the high water mark with views of the Hazards granite mountain range, the building is a modern interpretation of the beachfront shacks for which Tasmania is famous.

The architecturally designed accommodation sleeps 10, with four individual cabins and communal dining area and lounge room. The island is a couple of acres in size with about 1000 penguin burrows on it.

Watching as the penguins return to their burrows at dusk is one of the great attractions of staying overnight on the island.

In addition to the penguin colony there is prolific wildlife on and around the island, including sea eagles, shearwaters, dolphins, seals and whales.

The island is a 10-minute trip from the Coles Bay township and the local water taxi can take guests on tours around the Freycinet Peninsula.

Other adventure activities available in the area include kayaking and quad biking.

The accommodation is available from A$880 (US$675) per night.
