A Singaporean travel agent performing the minor pilgrimage (umrah) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, was killed on Tuesday (March 20) after a lorry crashed into the bus he was travelling in.
Thirty-one passengers were on board the bus, a number of which were injured in the collision, according to the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) in a Facebook post.
The passengers were pilgrims managed by Singapore travel agency, Abu Bakar Travel Services Private Limited, MUIS said. The pilgrims included Singaporeans and Malaysians, who had arrived in Mecca on March 12 via a Scoot flight, and were to return to Singapore on March 25.
The deceased is the travel agency’s director, Mohammad Abu Bakar Osman. His wife and two other Singaporeans are said to be in critical condition, reported Today.
Seventeen other passengers have been discharged. The injured were sent to three hospitals in Mecca to receive medical attention.
