18 April 2001KUALA LUMPUR – The Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station (KL Sentral) has opened its doors, meaning the 90-year-old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station ceases to be the boarding point and final destination for all inter-city train services.
KL Sentral is an integrated transport hub which houses three major rail network services namely the KTM Intercity, KTM Komuter or Putra Light Rail Transit.
The station has 28 tracks and 12 train platforms to serve 50 million passengers annually. It features sophisticated information display boards, closed circuit TVs, telecommunications services (IDD, STD, Internet) and is disabled-friendly with lifts, guideways and wheelchair services.
The fourth railway network to be linked to the KL Sentral is the Express Rail Link. Scheduled to be operational by the middle of next year, the ERL will provide express rail travel to the KL International Airport in Sepang. KL Sentral will then be the KL City Air Terminal where air passengers can check in their baggage and obtain their boarding passes prior to the 30-minute ride to the airport.
