Sumo wrestling is one of Japan’s most revered cultural traditions, yet for most visitors, the experience has largely been limited to watching from a distance.
Apartment hotel brand Mimaru, operated by Cosmos Hotel Management, is looking to change that with a new immersive offering in Tokyo.
Guests can now access a hands-on sumo dining experience at Sumo Live Restaurant Hirakuza Ginza Tokyo, where former professional wrestlers perform, explain and demonstrate the physical intensity and ceremonial rituals of Japan’s national sport.
The programme brings to life traditions such as the ring-purifying stomping ritual, while introducing guests to the etiquette, discipline and philosophy that define a sumo wrestler’s life.
With English-language commentary and interactive elements, selected guests are even invited into the ring to spar with the wrestlers, before ending the session with group photos.
The experience is paired with a traditional kaiseki meal, served with chanko nabe, the iconic dish of sumo wrestlers. Children receive the same menu in a kid-friendly presentation, while the venue also caters to vegan and Muslim guests.
Suitable for families, the programme is generally recommended for children aged five and above.
Guests staying at these Mimaru hotels in Tokyo, including Tokyo Hatchobori, Tokyo Station East, Tokyo Ginza East and Tokyo Nihombashi Suitengumae, will receive a sumo-themed plaque.
