Major changes are on the way for tax free shopping for international tourists in Japan.
The days of recouping tax on purchased goods at the point of sale are over.
From 1 November, tourists will be required to apply for the return of tax at customs upon departure from Japan, prior to check in for a return flight.
Tourists will still need to present their passport at the point of sale, which is then logged electronically for verification procedures.
JNTO has also flagged other changes to the current procedures.
Distinctions between general goods and consumables will be abolished. Although consumables will no longer need to be kept in sealed packaging, they will become ineligible for tax refunds if consumed within Japan.
Additionally, the period for taking purchased goods out of Japan will be extended from 30 days to 90 days.
