Kyoto is literally playing games to promote the historic city on the global stage.

The Japanese city has collaborated with Hi-Rez Studios to produce a dedicated Kyoto season in Rogue Company, a free-to-play online shooting game where users battle by claiming unique weapons and abilities as members of the company.

Season 3: The Kyoto Job was released 10 August, including a new map of the Palace: Kyoto City, Japan, and images of the city's historic sites and cultural properties.

Rogue Company has also committed to sharing the dedicated Kyoto launch on their official Twitter page, and to solicit donations to support the city's preservation efforts as part of a nationwide donation drive.

"Your donations from all over the world will help us to continue the efforts of carefully protecting, nurturing, and passing on the nature, landscape, and culture of Kyoto, which is a treasure of the world and a valuable asset of Japan, to the future," read a message from Kyoto City.

Since inception in September 2020, the game has gained more than 20 million users worldwide mostly in North America and Europe.
