Visitors to Shanghai’s Disney Resort waited for hours to be released from the main theme park on Monday after authorities locked in thousands for Covid testing

All visitors were directed to stay in the park until they returned a negative test for the virus.

One visitor who had flown in from Shenzhen for the theme park’s big Halloween event told SBS television in Australia that she was not allowed to leave the park until 10pm and the promised fireworks display and Halloween party did not happen.

Videos posted on Chinese social media site Weibo showed people running to the park's gates following the lockdown announcement but finding them locked.

The Happiest Place on Earth continued to operate rides for visitors stuck in the park during the closure, social media users reported.

On its website, the resort said, “In order to follow the requirement of pandemic prevention and control, Shanghai Disney Resort, including Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park will be closed starting Monday, October 31, 2022, with immediate effect.

“We will notify guests as soon as we have a confirmed date to resume operations. We apologise for the inconvenience and will provide refund or exchanges for all guests impacted during this period.”

Universal Beijing resort also shut its doors last Wednesday due to increasing pandemic cases.
