According to Benny S. Butarbutar, the airline’s spokesperson, the US flights are part of Garuda’s larger strategic expansion plan.
Currently, a feasibility plan is underway to examine profit projections, most profitable routes, aircraft availability and transit air rights with the Japanese government.
Under the terms of Garuda’s SkyTeam Alliance, in place since 2014, the carrier currently operates flights to Los Angeles and Seattle via Tokyo under a code share agreement with Delta Airlines.
Garuda Indonesia has recently been awarded a “category one” safety status by the US Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), clearing the way for them to operate scheduled commercial flights to the US.
