Scoot launches its Athens service

Scoot, a Singapore Airlines subsidiary, has plans to grow its long-haul network, starting with flights to Honolulu via Osaka.

Low-cost carrier Scoot's first long-haul flight to Athens took off from Singapore Changi Airport on Tuesday (June 20), with 316 passengers on board.

The eleven-and-a-half-hour flight to Greece on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the longest flight operated by Scoot, with the flight distance exceeding 10,000 kilometres.

Scoot, a Singapore Airlines subsidiary, has plans to grow its long-haul network, starting with flights to Honolulu via Osaka.

SIA has been expanding its budget operations through subsidiaries Scoot, which operates medium- and long-haul flights, and Tigerair, which operates shorter flights within the region.

Both budget carriers will be integrated under a common holding company, with Tigerair officially coming under the Scoot brand on July 25.

CAPA, the Centre for Aviation, says the completion of the Scoot-Tigerair merger will unlock new synergies, “but yields are under pressure due to intensifying competition and overcapacity in several markets, potentially wiping out the revenue and cost gains from the merger”.

CAPA adds, “Scoot is also inheriting a Tigerair A320 fleet with relatively high lease costs, and an order book which could prove to be overambitious. Meanwhile, the launch of long haul routes is always an expensive and somewhat risky proposition.”
