For the first time, Lufthansa is offering its Green fares on long-haul routes connecting Asia and Europe.
Lufthansa says the Economy Green and Business Green fares will reduce 20% of flight-related CO2emissions using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and offset the remaining 80% of the CO2emissions by an equivalent contribution climate protection project.
Europe’s biggest airline will add a fare surcharge to enable it to purchase sustainable aviation fuels and carbon offsets.
“This 20/80 combination of reduction and offsetting is firmly linked
to our Green Fares on European flights and enables more sustainable
flying,” the German carrier said in a statement.
As a first step, the fare is being tested on 12 routes, including from Bangkok to Vienna,
The selected routes address different target groups. From the
Lufthansa Group hubs, for example, Frankfurt - Bengaluru, Brussels -
Kinshasa, or Zurich - Los Angeles are offered. And anyone booking
flights with Lufthansa Group airlines, for example, from London to Hong
Kong or Paris to Bangkok via the airlines' hubs, will also automatically
be shown the Green Fares tariff.
“The growing demand for our Green Fares fare shows that more and more
people want to travel as sustainably as possible. We support them with
suitable offers," says Christina Foerster, member of the Lufthansa Group
Executive Board responsible for brand & sustainability.
In February, the Lufthansa Group successfully introduced Green Fares
for routes within Europe and to North Africa. Since the launch,
500,000-plus passengers have opted for a Green Fares flight.
The Lufthansa Group airlines participating in the test are Lufthansa,
Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and SWISS, which offer the
connections - if included in the respective route network - via their
booking sites.
The Green Fares long-haul fare are available on the following routes:
- Bangkok - Vienna (BKK - VIE)
- Brussels - Kinshasa (BRU - FIH)
- Frankfurt - Bengaluru (FRA - BLR)
- Frankfurt - Miami (FRA - MIA)
- Hong Kong - London (HKG - LHR/LCY)
- London - Hong Kong (LHR/LCY - HKG)
- Munich- Seoul (MUC - ICN)
- Nairobi - Frankfurt (NBO - FRA)
- Paris - Bangkok (CDG/ORY - BKK)
- Sao Paulo - Zurich (GRU - ZRH)
- Singapore - London (SIN - LHR/LCY)
- Zurich - Los Angeles (ZRH-LAX)
