Harley Davidson lands Garuda chief in trouble

JAKARTA - The future of the president director of flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia, Ari Askhara is under a cloud over allegations that an unassembled Harley Davidson motorcycle and folding bicycles were smuggled on board a new Garuda Indonesia Airbus A330-900 plane being delivered to the airline.

I will dismiss the Garuda president director and the process will be in accordance with regulated procedures,– State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir

Customs officers made the discovery when the new aircraft arrived in Jakarta carrying Garuda executives and employees.

State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir called a media conference on Thursday to warn that he intends to dismiss the president director following the discovery of the contraband.

“I will dismiss the Garuda president director and the process will be in accordance with regulated procedures,” Erick told a joint press conference with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

Garuda will need to hold an extraordinary shareholders meeting to remove a member of its board of directors, the Jakarta Post reported.

An audit committee report linked the Harley Davidson to Ari, the SOE minister said “This case has saddened me. While I’m working to raise the country’s image, some people within [SOEs] seem not to be ready,” Erick said.
