BEIJING - China's new US$17 billion mega airport has opened its doors. Daxing International Airport spans 700,000 square metres, or 98 football fields, says state media outlet China Daily.
The airport – nicknamed Starfish because of its design by the architecture team of the late Zaha Hadid – complements the longstanding Beijing Capital International Airport.
Daxing, which has four runways, will have capacity to handle 45 million passengers annually by 2021 and 72 million by 2025.
Officials say a new airport was needed to take the pressure off the overcrowded Beijing Capital, the world's second-busiest after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Daxing’s first commercial flight, a China Southern Airlines plane bound for the southern province of Guangdong, took off Wednesday afternoon, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
International carriers, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Finnair, have announced routes to Daxing.
Daxing Airport includes a central transport hub, including high-speed rail, intercity trains, and subway.
According to GoShopBeijing.com, the airport is connected via a new subway line to the central area of Beijing. It will be the fastest subway/metro line in China allowing passengers to transfer easily and reach the airport in under 20 minutes.
Other transfer options include six city bus routes, intercity bus lines, taxis, and the High-Speed Rail Station at the airport connecting to other cities. There will also be an interconnecting rail line between Beijing Capital Airport and Daxing Airport.
