The rising popularity in Asia of high-end glamping experiences – and the opportunities this niche sector offers to investors, operators and consumers – will be front and centre of an industry summit being held in Phuket.

The Asia Pacific Outdoor Lodging Association (APOLA) will host a dedicated masterclass on 31 August at Angsana Hotel in Laguna Phuket, followed by further discussions during Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism (PHIST) on 1 September.

Driven by changing traveller preferences, the outdoor lodging sector is forecast to grow by 10.8% annually between 2025 and 2030, APOLA notes.

Recent research has identified that eco-conscious travellers are increasingly drawn to off-grid, solar-powered tented camps, treehouses, cabins and nature pods, as the appeal of sustainable, nature-based accommodation continues to expand.

In response to the sector’s rapid expansion, APOLA will present an outdoor lodging masterclass on 31 August in Phuket. The half-day session will provide practical insights into finance, sustainability, lodge operations and guest experiences.

Speakers will include respected industry figures such as John Roberts of Minor Hotels, Allan Michaud of Cardamom Tented Camp, Michael Sagely of Cloud Collective, Tom Butterfield of Eco Structures, and Ueli Wick of Escape Nomade. The event will be moderated by Paul Dean of Dean and Associates.

Attendees will also hear from additional APOLA experts, with a chance to win a two-night stay at Cambodia’s Cardamom Tented Camp. Registration for the masterclass is THB1,500 (US$46) and includes refreshments and learning materials.

“If you are looking for ideas and insights in finance, sustainability, lodge operations or guest experiences, the outdoor lodging masterclass promises to be a treasure trove of practical insights,” said Paul Dean, principal of Dean and Associates, who will moderate the session.
