Location and History

George Stephen, later raised to British peerage as Lord Mount Stephen, was one of North America's richest people when he had this neo-Renaissance mansion built as his residence in 1883. Montreal's Golden Square Mile was named for the concentration of wealth in the neighborhood, and this property was a prime example.

In 1927, the private Mount Stephen Club bought the property, which in 1971 was recognized as a National Historic site.
