A new report has revealed that Chinese travellers are increasingly choosing cheaper domestic destinations over overseas tourist hotspots.

The main reason for preferring their home country was "abundant domestic travel options”, the survey by consulting firm Oliver Wyman found.

Another reason to stay at home was that international travel was "too costly".

Only 14% of high-income households that travelled internationally last year plan to go abroad again in 2024, according to the survey of families in mainland China earning at least US$50,000 a year.

Yangzhou, Luoyang, Qinhuangdao, Guilin and Zibo were the cities showing the fastest growth in attracting domestic visitors, a result attributed to moves by local governments outside China's big cities to use social media marketing to attract tourists, Oliver Wyman said.
