MUMBAI - Mumbai will regain its reputation as a 24-hour city after the Maharashtra government signalled in January that commercial establishments would be allowed to trade around the clock.

The long-pending proposal will allow restaurants, fast food outlets and shopping malls to remain open all hours.

The exemption, however, will not apply to restaurants that serve alcohol, so pubs, bars and liquor shops will be tied to a 1.30 am deadline.

The Maharashtra government expects the move – three decades after 24x7 trading was abolished - will generate jobs, drive tourism and boost the economy.
