The first anniversary of the Panstar Miracle – South Korea’s first cruise ferry – has accelerated Panstar Group’s expansion into leisure cruising.

Traditionally focused on shipping, logistics and transportation-centred ferry services linking South Korea and Japan, the Busan-based company is now repositioning its ferry business around experiential travel.

Built to replace the Panstar Dream, the 22,000-ton Panstar Miracle was designed with leisure cruising in mind. The vessel reduced the number of cabins compared to its predecessor to create more space for lifestyle and entertainment facilities.

The ship also marks a milestone for Korea’s shipbuilding sector as the country’s first domestically built cruise ferry. Features include hybrid propulsion, enhanced hull safety systems, air sterilisation technology and satellite-based Wi-Fi.

Onboard amenities include a swimming pool, multiple dining concepts, wellness facilities, lounges, game rooms and family-friendly zones.

Since entering service, the 22,000-ton cruise ferry has carried around 50,000 passengers across its Busan–Osaka Seto Inland Sea cruise (40,000 passengers), one-night sailings (10,000 passengers) and a growing slate of themed itineraries.

Foreign passengers accounted for about 30% of passengers on the Busan–Osaka route, representing more than 60 countries including the US, Australia, Germany, Canada and the UK.

There is also strong uptake among younger travellers, with passengers under 40 making up 76% of passengers on the Seto Inland Sea route.

Panstar has also broadened its offerings with sailings from Pohang to Japan’s western coast, as well as coastal cruises to Jeju and Yeosu.

Seasonal and themed programmes – including Ocean Club, summer sailings and Christmas cruises –were also recently introduced.
