Work on components of the RM43 billion (US$10.6 billion) Melaka Gateway project such as the international cruise terminal and jetty is halfway through and expected to complete by the third quarter of 2019.
The concessionaire of the project, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd (KAJD), said that it will be meeting with the authorities to go over the latest project updates, including the Transport Ministry as well as port regulator Port Klang Authority (PKA), New Straits Times reported.
Launched in 2014, the 552-ha project consists of three manmade islands and one natural island, including the Melaka International Cruise Terminal, developed in partnership with US-based Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) on its first island.
Once complete, the cruise terminal is expected to draw 2.5 million tourists a year.
The island, Pulau Melaka East 1, is set to become the largest private marina in South East Asia by 2025. It will feature a cruise terminal and jetty, commercial, cultural, heritage, entertainment, lifestyle and wellness elements.
The privately funded project is estimated to create 40,000 to 45,000 jobs over 10 years with a projected economic multiplier that is anticipated to generate RM1.88 trillion (US$463 billion) for the local economy once completed.
