From land to sea, festivals create the flow for cheers onboard cruise ships

Following the success of thematic cruise events launched in line with major Hong Kong events and festivals, Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) will continue to fuel newfound demand for cruising by working closely with cruise line partners, Dream Cruises and Royal Caribbean International (RCI).

“We have been working closely with cruise line partners to spur local demand for cruise travel since the restart of cruising earlier this year,” HKTB’s Kenneth Wong, General Manager, MICE & Cruise said. “The idea of aligning major events and festivals onshore with activities onboard has proven effective and practical.”

Wong further stated that with this series of upcoming thematic cruise events, HKTB aims to showcase “the city’s fascinating tourism offerings, ultimately broadcasting a positive voice about Hong Kong to global audiences".

Wining and dining the cruisers

During Hong Kong’s Wine & Dine month in November, Dream Cruises’ Genting Dream and RCI’s Spectrum of the Seas each rolled out an exclusive cruise programme offering an eclectic mix of alcoholic beverages and dining experiences.

Dream Cruises’ ‘C’est La Sea!’ programme on Genting Dream featured mixology workshops, live entertainment and tastings of signature drinks, which according to Christine Li, senior vice president and head of marketing at Genting Cruise Lines, “was very well received”.

Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas created special wine-pairing menus at designated restaurants complete with beverage packages and wine offers. Crystal Campbell, managing director of Royal Caribbean Cruises Hong Kong Ltd, lauded it a resounding success, saying, “The Wine & Dine programme has created noise and awareness about our unforgettable cruise experience.”

HKTB further contributed in fuelling cruising interest for the two cruise lines’ Wine & Dine activities with social campaigns starring local celebrity Joyce Cheng, along with a series of media programmes.

Bringing festive cheer onboard

Genting Dream and Spectrum of the Seas, both home-ported in Hong Kong, will present their own takes on Winterfest at Sea for cruisers to celebrate the upcoming holiday season onboard the ships.

Genting Dream’s ‘Nordic Christmas Adventure’ will feature Christmas-themed dining experiences, activities, handicraft workshops and entertainment, while Spectrum of the Seas’ ‘Sparkling Christmas’ will see the ship decked out with holiday décor and season-limited activities, workshops, dining offerings and Broadway-style shows.

“We believe Hong Kong’s holidaymakers will thoroughly enjoy Dream Cruises’ ‘Nordic Christmas Adventure’,” Li of Genting Cruise Lines said. “With our ongoing partnership with the HKTB, Dream Cruises is looking forward to providing even more innovative activities onboard our ship in 2022 to enhance the Super Seacation experience for Hong Kong.”

In the same vein, Campbell of Royal Caribbean believes that the Spectrum of the Seas’ “upcoming Christmas and New Year cruises will continue to fuel the excitement and momentum of local cruise travel".
